The Single Woman’s Dash of Sass: Celebrate Your Inner Princess

Quote of the Day:

“If I am a princess in rags and tatters, I can be a princess inside. It would be easy to be a princess if I were dressed in cloth of gold, but it is a great deal more of a triumph to be one all the time when no one knows it.” ~A Little Princess

The Single Woman Says:

Much to my delight, I discovered yesterday that this week is the first annual “National Princess Week,” as declared by Disney. Now I know a lot of folks take issue with Disney for their pushing the princess agenda to little girls everywhere, but I personally love it. I think it is so vital for little girls to be reminded daily that they are as beautiful, worthy, and noble as princesses. That they don’t need a tiara to hold their head high. And that they don’t need crown jewels to shine. As girls and women, we face so many attacks on our appearance, our weight, our character, our inner beauty – that I think it’s refreshing to celebrate women for what they are – princesses. So this week, for the rest of the week, we’ll be celebrating National Princess Week here in the daily Dash of Sass, as we talk “getting in touch with our inner princess.”

Today I chose this quote from one of my favorite childhood stories, A Little Princess, because I wanted to remind you guys what being a princess is all about. It’s not about how rich you are. It’s not about how beautiful you are. And it’s not about how “well put together” you are. For example, Princess Diana – the “people’s princess,” she was lovingly called – had problems by the dozen. She battled eating disorders and insecurity and marriage troubles…and yet, she will go down in history as one of the most revered and respected figures of all time. Why? Because she was the picture perfect princess? NO. Because she was beautifully, wonderfully HUMAN. She made mistakes; sometimes big ones. She often got it wrong. She crumbled in the face of pressure. But she loved with her whole heart. She shined her light of compassion on humanity. And she never stopped trying to add a little happiness and beauty to the world. And I think THAT’S what being a princess is all about. Knowing that your tiara might be temporary, but your impact is forever. So today: Whether you’re rockin’ Oscar de le Renta or Old Navy…celebrate your inner princess. She may not be perfect…but she is completely, entirely, unquestionably worth it.
