Watching “The Voice” this week, I was baffled to see that not just on the first night, but two nights in a row…Christina Aguilera did not have on pants. She was wearing some sort of bodysuit/leotard/”giant sparkly diaper” (as one person tweeted) thing and fishnet tights, but no pants. And it’s not like she was up on stage performing some sort of a number that required no pants. She was wearing no pants to man her position as coach. Now, I know Lady Gaga is also not a fan of covering her lower extremities…and a few other starlets have been photographed walking around in public sans pants…and while I greatly respect Gaga for her musical prowess…I have to say, I’m left scratching my head. When did it become “the norm” to stroll around in public half naked? And what is the point of strolling around half naked? To show the world how special you AREN’T? Isn’t anything sacred and off limits anymore?  

I should tell you that in no way, shape, or form am I an ultra-conservative dresser…and I believe in strapless dresses and cutoff jean shorts and cute bikinis. But I believe in them in their element. I wouldn’t prance into my office wearing a string bikini. There is a time and a place for sexy. There is also a fine line between sexy and skanky. Back in the Victorian age, it was considered scandalous if a lady let a man catch a glimpse of her ankles! And while I don’t think it’s time to regress to wearing hoop skirts, I DO wish women would start to see that their bodies are precious and sacred. We are meant to be temples, not 7-11’s. We wouldn’t bare our souls to just anyone, so why does it seem women today are so eager to bare our bodies? One of Christina’s arguments she made on “The Voice” was that Tony Lucca’s performance of “99 Problems” by Jay-Z was “derogatory toward women,” but I would argue that Christina’s portrayal of womanhood was just as derogatory, if not more so, than Tony’s song. Shouldn’t a strong, bold, confident woman like Christina Aguilera show a little more pride in the sanctity of her body? Remember: People can’t be expected to respect you anymore than you respect yourself, and your outside appearance is a direct reflection of how you feel about yourself on the inside. It always, always starts with you. Realize that you are as special and rare as a diamond and should treat yourself as such…and the world won’t be far behind.
