The Single Woman’s Dash of Sass: Your Self Worth is NOT For Sale!

Quotes of the Day:

“The price tag you put on yourself decides your worth. Underestimating yourself will cost you dearly.” ~Apoorve Dubey

“As long as you look for someone else to validate who you are by seeking their approval, you are setting yourself up for disaster. You have to be whole and complete in yourself. No one can give you that. You have to know who you are – what others say is irrelevant.” ~Nic Sheff

“No amount of money on this planet and beyond should be able to buy your self-worth, dignity & respect.” ~Nikida Taste

The Single Woman Says:

My sister and I had a yard sale last weekend, and it really opened my eyes to the parallels between undervaluing your belongings and undervaluing YOURSELF.

For example, one of the items I was selling was a brand new white tutu that I wore only once as part of a Halloween costume a couple of years ago when I went as Carrie Bradshaw. I bought the tutu for around $29, and it’s in mint condition. Since I’m extremely familiar with yard sale pricing, I put a price tag of $1 on the tutu, thinking this was MORE than reasonable for a practically new item. Well, one of the yard sale customers picked it up, looked it over, and asked if I would take 50 cents for it since it had “a rip in the lining.” (There was no such rip in the lining, by the way.) I promptly told her no, I would not take 50 cents for an essentially brand new item that I purchased for around $30. She threw the tutu down and huffed off…and my dad turned to me and asked: “Why didn’t you just sell it to her?”

Well, to me, the reason is obvious. The item was worth MUCH more than what she was willing to give. I would frankly rather have kept the tutu myself, even if I never wore it again, that sell it for less than what I felt it was worth. And sure enough, a couple of hours later, another lady handed over the $1 I was asking for the tutu without batting an eye. So the lesson here is this: If you surrender your self-worth to someone who doesn’t see your true value…what happens when someone comes along who wants to give you what you’re worth instead of what you’ll settle for?

The bottom line is this: You’ve gotta know your worth, at yard sales AND in life…because there are a whole lotta people who are gonna try & talk you out of it. If they can’t see your value, let ’em keep on movin’! Someone out there is looking for exactly what you’ve got…and will never try and undercut your value or question your worth. Some things in life just can’t be bartered over or placed on the sale rack – and your self-worth is at the top of the list.
