The Single Woman’s Dash of Sass: 10/11/12 – The Beauty of Chaos

Quote of the Day:

“Our real discoveries come from chaos, from going to the place that looks wrong and stupid and foolish.” ~Chuck Palahniuk

“You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star.” ~Friedrich Nietzsche

“Breaking rules isn’t bad when what you’re doing is more important than the rule itself.” ~Kim Harrison

The Single Woman Says:

Today is 10-11-12: A day in which it would seemingly make sense to celebrate order and perfection and symmetry…but I’m finding in my own life, especially lately, that order can be great, but chaos is where all the magic is.

What? You might ask. Condoning CHAOS?!? Disorder? Disorganization? Disarray? Well, in a word…YES.

What do I mean by that? Well, the thing is, you can’t find your perfect place of order and symmetry and belonging in this world without risking complete chaos, madness, and rejection. All the really great moments of my life have come on the flip side of some really stupid decisions. I took off to New York on a whim to see a guy that cared about me enough to stage a proposal but not enough to actually propose – and you know what happened as a result? I FINALLY GOT OVER HIM! After six long years, that trip finally broke his spell over me, once and for all. Plus I had the time of my life (and I owed it all to ME)! A friend and I blatantly trespassed on private property in Wilmington, North Carolina ten years ago just to take pictures of the houses where they filmed Dawson’s Creek (yes, it’s my all-time favorite show)…and we had a chance run-in with the casting director, who cast us as extras on the show the very next day. Even The Single Woman was born from the end of a relationship that I never should have been in! Now do I condone chasing guys, trespassing, and bad relationships? NO! But I do condone getting sweaty, getting dirty, getting your hair messed up and breaking a few nails if it means you got your butt up off the bench and played the game! Even if you play and lose, at least you can say you didn’t spend your life on the sidelines, watching everyone else LIVE!

The most dangerous thing about your comfort zone is that it’s comfortable. It lulls you into believing that you’re in the right place. But if you’re not feeling some pain, feeling some doubt, feeling some fear on a regular basis…I can tell you right now, you are NOT in the right place.

Don’t run from chaos. Embrace it. When everything in your life is up in the air, it means things are coming together in a way far better than you ever could have planned for or orchestrated. Great chaos precedes great CHANGE. If you’re wondering why your life never changes, it could be because you’re holding on too tight to order and safety and normalcy. Get out there today and get aggressive. Get bold. Get risky. Get stupid. Get crazy. Whatever you would normally do, try doing the opposite all day long and see what happens! As Thomas Jefferson once said: “If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.”
