The Single Woman’s Dash of Sass: Stop Talking. Start DOING.

Quote of the Day:

Successful people are always looking for opportunities to help others. Unsuccessful people are always asking, “What’s in it for me?” ~Brian Tracy

The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing. ~Walt Disney

Note to self: finding a cool quote and writing it in your journal is not a substitute for Getting. It. Done.  ~Betsy Cañas Garmon

The Single Woman Says:

I’ve always been a big fan of volunteer work. I just think it’s important to get out there in the community that you are a part of and do your part, however big or small, to make a difference. To that end, I have signed up to volunteer for Feed America First (see FeedAmericaFirst.com) through the holidays and plan to keep volunteering even after the holidays are over. This past Wednesday night I worked with numerous other volunteers to sort donated food and create food boxes for families in need. It was while on my hands and knees digging through a giant trough of tattered cake mix boxes and beaten up cans of food, with my hands are arms blackened by dust and dirt, that it hit me.

The real work happens in in the trenches. Everything else is just talk.

A lot of people talk about how to make the world a very place. Very few people actually get out there and DO it.

This is not to say that I am perfect and deserve the Nobel Prize for volunteerism, because Lord knows there are times when I have been guilty of talking about making a difference but following up my talk with very little action. We all have. But that ends right here for me. It was only in the midst of actually physically SERVING others that I truly grasped the vast difference between intention and action. Good intentions are great, but at the end of the day, they mean very little if not coupled with ACTION. This is true in every area of our lives, not just in helping others…but also in helping ourselves. I say all this to encourage you not just today, but every day, to stop talking and start DOING. Don’t let the things you planned to do become the things you never did. Especially with the New Year upon us, there is no time like the present to get up off our butts and start getting it done. “It” being volunteering…quitting that dead end job…starting an exercise program…trying out for that play…writing the book…ending that toxic relationship…and so on and so on. Whatever your “IT” is – just do IT! Get down in the trenches of volunteer work, of your dreams, of your plans, of your goals…and start making a good intention a GREAT reality! Join me in 2013 in my vow to talk less and do more.

Imagine what kind of a ripple effect we could have on the planet if we all replaced big talk with even BIGGER action…
