The Single Woman’s Dash of Sass: The Great Purge

Quote of the Day:

“If you wanna fly, you gotta give up the stuff that weighs you down.” ~Toni Morrison

The Single Woman Says:

It’s raining where I’m at today, and I like to think it’s God’s way of purging the world of 2012 and polishing it up for 2013. One of my favorite things to do every new year is to start with a clean slate. What do I mean by that? Well, first, my Vision Board will be erased of last year’s goals and replaced with this year’s goals. And then I will do what I like to call “The Great Purge.” Simply put, I go through every last inch of my apartment (drawers, closets, cabinets, under the bed, bookshelves, etc. etc.) and toss out everything that I no longer have use for. You know what I’m talking about. Those skinny jeans you haven’t worn in 3 years, but you know someday soon you’re going to diet your way back into them, so you keep them “just in case.” Those half-filled bottles of old perfume. The condiments in your fridge that expired back when you still fit into those skinny jeans. Yes, The Great Purge is a great way to physically clear the clutter out of your life, and when you physically clear the clutter, it helps you also acknowledge and confront the emotional clutter in your life, as well.

Emotional clutter: Exes’ numbers in your phone, his old sweatshirt that you still sleep in, people that bring only negative energy to your Twitter and Facebook feeds, the list goes on and on, but you get the point. Starting the new year dragging along old baggage is a good way to spend the new year walking in circles. Sometimes you have to physically remove things from your presence in order to emotionally move on with your life. Today: Whether it’s physical or emotional, clear the clutter. Clean your closet. Wipe the slate clean. Don’t cling to trash and miss out on the treasure.

This is Day 1 of a 365 page book. You deserve a blank page.

I just purged some things today. It took me 1 year and 2 months to purge a man who I knew for 11 years, to purge texts, phone numbers and emails from my devices.
