Dash of Sass: Want a Bestselling Life? Stay Open to Edits!

Quote of the Day:

“It’s never too late – in fiction or in life – to revise.” ~Nancy Thayer

The Single Woman Says:

Since my life is consumed by writing these days, I thought I’d share a little more wisdom with you today that I’m learning from the book-writing process.

Writing a book is one thing, with all of its many challenges and fears and breakthroughs, but the editing process…now that’s a whole different beast. It’s humbling. It’s a little overwhelming. It’s ego-killing. It is voluntarily offering your words and your creativity and your HEART up for inspection, for scrutiny, for rejection. It is hearing from someone else that your best is not really your best. It’s being forced to admit that maybe you don’t know everything there is to know about writing, after all.

But you know what else it does?

It polishes you. It takes the small little nuggets of magic and wisdom and beauty you’ve created and turns them into bright shining diamonds. It pushes you to consider other points of view…to be open to change…to concede to the experience and wisdom of another. It helps you see that while it doesn’t necessarily TAKE a village to inspire someone to live their best life…a village certainly helps.

The editing process is much like life. In life you can choose to listen to the ideas and opinions and recommendations of others or you can ignore them. You can dismiss any suggestion that doesn’t align with your opinion, or you can open yourself up to new perspectives. And you can have a life story that ends up in the bargain bin after two weeks or one that spends two years on the New York Times bestseller list. The choice is up to you.

The Bible says “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” (Prov. 27.17) The people in your life aren’t there by accident. They’re there for a reason. To sharpen you. To polish you. At times, to break you down and then build you back up. Consider the fact that maybe you don’t know everything. Consider the fact that maybe that grain of sand in your life is there specifically to inspire you become a pearl. Then stop pushing everyone out of your life who challenges you and tests you and confronts you and realize that maybe, just maybe, they are the editors of your life.

If you want a bestselling book, you’ve gotta stay open to edits, revisions, & rewrites. Same goes for a bestselling life.
