Are you a doer or a talker?

I was so inspired this morning by a word from a friend who helped me see a parable from Jesus in a whole new light. It’s a familiar parable, the Parable of the Talents…but today I saw it differently than I ever have.

The gist of the story (thank you, Bible.org for the succinct explanation) is this: A man is preparing to leave on a journey and entrusts his possessions to his servants. He distributes his wealth among three servants, apportioned to them on the basis of their abilities. To the first he entrusts five talents, to the second two talents, and to the third one talent. The first two servants quickly set to work making the most of their talents. The third servant does not invest his master’s money at all; he instead digs a hole in the ground and buries it. When the master returns, the first two eagerly meet him, apparently delighted in the opportunity to multiply their master’s money. The master commends them with this: “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful in a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master.”

The third servant, however, is a very different matter. This servant comes back to his master with only the talent his master had originally entrusted to him. The servant offers a feeble excuse for his conduct. He tells his master that he is a harsh and cruel man, a man who is demanding, and who expects gain where he has not labored. He contends that this is why he was afraid to take a risk with any kind of investment. And so he simply hid the money, and then returns it, without any gain.

How often do we take what has been given to us…our talents, our time, our blessings, our money, our health, our God-given destiny…and simply squander it away, too busy complaining about how nothing good is happening to us to get out there and hustle for it ourselves? Particularly as single women, it can get real easy to fall into the negative mindset of “Why isn’t God bringing me a mate? Why am I still alone? Why am I attracting the court jester instead of the prince?” Ladies, here’s something you’ve gotta realize, and I say this with love: Your intentions mean nothing. It’s your ACTION that counts. God didn’t say “Well thought out” to his servants. He didn’t say “Well strategized” or “Well intended” or “Well pondered” or “Well considered.” He said “Well DONE.” Done. Think about that word for a minute. It implies action. Not thought. Not intention. Not consideration. ACTION.

Here is my point. If you are sitting around twiddling your thumbs and wasting your God-given talents while you watch the clock tick away on your life, STOP THIS MINUTE. God isn’t going to award a Motel 6 mentality with a Waldorf Astoria reality. If you’re wondering why God hasn’t delivered you a King, it could be because you are not yet a Queen. Instead of spending your time WAITING, get busy DOING. Work on YOU. Focus on YOU. Get your credit in shape. Get yourself in shape. Get that degree you’ve been putting off. Apply for that dream job. Buy a house. Establish your kingdom, then invite a prince to come JOIN you IN IT, not rescue you FROM it! Wait on God but while you’re patiently waiting on Him to bring about His perfect will for your life, whether it be a relationship or a job or some other dream all together…make the most of what He has already given you. Then when your Prince Charming does arrive, you won’t be Cinderella sweeping the floors, you’ll be the Cinderella sweeping him off of his feet.
