One Ordinary Tuesday: The Most Perfect Non-First-Date Ever

Enchanting“There weren’t perfect people, nor were there perfect lives or perfect relationships. There were, however, perfect moments. And this was one of them.”  ~Nicole Williams

I’m a big fan of Hollywood moments. Those moments that feel so special and so magical, however fleeting they may be, you can think of nothing else to compare them to but a movie. I think because I’m such a fan of these moments, I often attract them into my life without meaning to. This happened to me Tuesday night. A crazy, almost unbelievable series of events plucked me from my intended plans of the day and placed me right smack dab in the middle of my own romantic comedy. As least that’s what it felt like. I can’t swear that this is EXACTLY how it happened…but this is how it felt for me.

I had a day packed with meetings, and had just wrapped up my third meeting of the day at a coffee shop when I looked up and spotted him walking through the door: A guy I once had a brief flirtation with a few years ago. He waved, I waved, he made his way over to my table, and I invited him to sit down and hang for a few minutes. He accepted my invitation and went to fetch his coffee. His great big Venti giant-sized hot cup of coffee. A cup of coffee that literally and inexplicably leapt from his hands as he was sitting back down at the table and flew EVERYWHERE. My computer and iPhone were sitting on the table and I reached to snatch up my computer while he grabbed up my phone…both of us trying to rescue my devices from the tidal wave of coffee. Coffee that somehow, inexplicably, flew all over the table, window, and floor…but not a drop landed on me or my clothes.

As a barista ran over to mop up the mess, I inspected my phone. It had some droplets dotted here and there, but texts and emails still continued to flood in, so I assumed it was fine. Me and Former Flirtation sat back down and had a proper catch-up for about a half hour. It was only after he left and my friend Jaime rang my phone that I realized: Everything about my phone was still in working order…except for the phone itself. There was nothing but silence. We tried again and again to connect, and though Jaime could hear me clearly – I could hear nothing but deafening silence. Sigh. My phone was broken.

Since I’m pretty much helpless without a phone, I knew it had to be replaced ASAP. The rest of my work day now a wash, I made my way down the street to the Keeper of the Phone Store (a store that shall remain nameless to protect the identity of…well, you’ll find out soon enough). Though the day had robbed me of my phone, it had been an immensely encouraging and positive day in so many other ways…so when I walked in the Keeper of the Phone Store, I was flying high. I felt like I was in The Zone. I was excited and happy and in great spirits.

Which is why, in all my blissed-out glory, I didn’t really notice right away that the Phone Guy who worked at the Keeper of the Phone Store was totally adorable. I explained to him the situation with my phone and told him all about Former Flirtation ruining it with his gargantuan-sized latte. He laughed and went to check his Super Secret Computer to see if I was eligible for an upgrade. Unfortunately, the machine came back with the message: Not eligible til March 1st flashing in a rather unfriendly shade of red. But I need a phone NOW, I explained. I can’t wait til March. What else can we do?

It turned out my only option was to either purchase a new phone at full price to the tune of $500-$600…or plead my case to Sprint in the hopes that they would have mercy on me and my coffee-logged phone and give me an early upgrade. “But…” Phone Guy went on, “This rarely happens. You can try, but you probably won’t get anywhere.”

In stubborn determination, I asked him to dial up Sprint from his Super Secret Phone (since mine was still housing the remains of Former Flirtation’s super-sized latte.) With an incredulous look, Cute Phone Guy dialed the number and handed me the phone. A very nice man named Donald listened to my appeal before telling me he would have to check with his supervisor to approve an early upgrade. I was then placed on hold for a solid ten minutes…during which I finally took a moment to inspect my surroundings and realize that Phone Guy was actually Cute Phone Guy. Some might even say Really Cute Phone Guy….

“Mandy?” Donald from Sprint suddenly interjected in the midst of my observation. “I talked to my supervisor and we’ve gotten the approval to go ahead and give you an early upgrade!”

I literally leapt in the air like a crazy person. I hung up the phone Glee-fully to report back to Cute Phone Guy, who looked honestly shocked. “Wow,” he said. “I’ve honestly never seen that happen before. Especially with Sprint. This is like a miracle!”

Not a miracle, I was quick to point out. God’s favor. God’s favor that seemed to be flowing like Former Flirtation’s latte, because a few minutes later and a few more entries into his Super Secret Computer…and Cute Phone Guy informed me that not only would I be upgrading to a new phone for free…I would also be receiving $93 BACK! What?!? How?!? Why?!?

Once the transaction had been made, all that was left to do was transfer my contacts and pics and other data from the old phone to the new phone. A process that should have taken maybe 20-30 minutes.

Instead it ended up taking TWO HOURS.

“What?” my friend Anetra shrieked when I repeated the story back to her. “What did you do? Go shopping?”

Nope. I didn’t.

What I did…was stand there and talk to Cute Phone Guy. For two hours. For 120 minutes. For the rest of his shift at the Keeper of the Phone Store.

And it was one of the best conversations I’ve had with a guy in a very long time.

We talked about faith, and our careers, and our dreams, and my crazy life…and we laughed and joked and had more fun than I’ve had on most first dates I’ve been on recently. Which I told him. After he told me that it was one of the best nights he had ever had at the Keeper of the Phone Store. It just felt like that for those two hours, during that wrinkle in time…away from my hectic schedule…away from my constantly buzzing phone and emails and deadlines and responsibilities that the phone represents…away from the world in general…I connected with another human being in a very real, very pure, very innocent and authentic way.

And it was nice.

And the truth is…I don’t know Cute Phone Guy beyond the two hours I spent with him at the Keeper of the Phone Store. I don’t know if I’ll ever know him. For all I know, he had someone waiting at home for him. He did ask for my number before we parted ways, but whether or not he’ll ever really use it is a question I don’t have the answer to. And maybe…just maybe…I don’t need the answer. Maybe that one, almost perfect, two-hour interlude at a department store on a Tuesday night was enough. It was certainly enough to restore my hope in the possibility of meeting someone around the next corner. As a single woman, it can sometimes feel like life is a giant game of musical chairs, where everyone around me has paired off and sat down cozily in their chairs with their significant others, and I’m left standing alone and uncertain and convinced that all the good ones are gone.

Tuesday night was proof that they’re not. An ordinary Tuesday night at an ordinary department store where a really amazing and unexpected connection with a guy I don’t know served as a little “God wink” to let me know that you really can, on any given day, at any given time, at any given place…encounter someone who has the potential to change your life.

Or at least your night. 🙂

I don’t know if I’ll ever see Cute Phone Guy again. And I don’t know if he’ll ever find his way to this blog. If he does…the words I would say to him are really quite simple:

“It was enchanting to meet you.”  ~Taylor Swift

I had one of those chance meetings of my own several weeks ago. I was at a friends house and In walks this guy who was a friend of a friend. We were automatically drawn to eachother although he was the exact oppisite of my usual “type” he was so handsome in his own artsy way and told me he was drawn to me immediately and that I was beautiful. We found the only quiet spot in the house which was the stairwell lol and talked for hours. At the end of the evening he kissed me and all I can say was it was magic. We both live in different cities and lead different lives but for those few hours he made me believe again and for that i will be forever greatful.

I recently had an experience, post 18 month break up.. had given up on meeting a decent person, in desperation for connection with another person I had joined a dating site. Which was an awful experience.. being down ran out to grab a coffee and bumped into my ex and his new girl, I had thought about how awful this experience would be plenty of times, but instead of being horrible, it was the most freeing moment of my life.. I said my hellos and goodbyes in one breath, held my head up and walked away lighthearted and free..(divine intervention)
Went home to delete my dating site account and trust and let god do his work in his time, I took one last glimpse at the list of messages and the very first one stopped me in my tracks, we politely chatted for a few and agreed to meet later for drink…so nervous I had never done anything like this before..
form the first hand shake and polite 3 hour conversation I was enchanted..
I have been awe struck since that meeting.. even though we only meet a few time since and exchanged a few polite text
I felt if he just breathed a few joy that had been missing for years into my heart..
it may have been only for a moment but he has enchanted me and restored hope to my heart..
nothing may come from it..( still praying)
I love Gods Wink! reminding me to let go and trust in him.

I recently went on my first date since my relationship ended. I was really nervous to be putting myself back out there. I wasn’t sure how the date was going to turn out. It was truly an amazing experience; we spent the entire time talking and laughing. It went ten times better than I would have ever imagined. I’m pretty sure that we will remain good friends, I don’t see a romance brewing. But that night showed me that I can put myself out there and just enjoy the ride. That date restored my faith in dating. I will always appreciate him for that 🙂

So there’s this guy that I’ve thought is cute for a while now, he works at a store that I often shop. Well he has always acknowledged me with a nod, a smile or a how you doing but never approached me. Just recently I found out that I know his sister & so did he. He came up & introduced himself & now everytime he sees me he hugs me & chats me up. He looked me up on FB but beyond that nothing! Trying not to dwell on it, but now I’m scared to go I to the store because what if he does talk to me more & I dont know what to say or what if he doesn’t talk anymore!! Uh this is why I’ve purposed to focus on my kids & myself because men can be such a distraction!!

A couple years ago just after my divorce was finalized and i was sure as a new divorcee for the 2nd time that i would never meet any one cause i work with kids and all women and every one i know is already married… I had my God wink moment. I was leaving school and a car pulls into the parking lot and a very handsome man jumps out of the car, throws open his hood and his engine is on fire and he begins to beat it out with a blanket from the back seat, i ran to his car to assist him as best i could. When it was all done, i said to him after he got off the phone did he need a ride home, or was his wife coming to get him. To which he replied, no wife but a friend would come in a couple hours after he got off work… He then said – he would love to take me out to dinner for being so helpful. We took my car, had a nice dinner, and yes he too was very handsome. It was a wonderful NON date. He did take my number, but it never went any where else. But i remember thinking : See God could send someone still – into my life even if it had to be in the most unusual way and i need not worry – when the time was right someone special would find me even in the world i lived and worked in…

Joy, I really enjoyed your story. I have been divorced twice as well and I just assumed there was no one for me. God is truly teaching me patients in this area of my life. I have decided to live in the ‘NOW’ of my life. I am not thinking about the future and I am not keeping my past around. Thank you so much for sharing!

Thanks for your story and reminding me that maybe, just maybe there are still good guys out there. At 51, “the pickins are slim” as they say. It seems the older you get, the fewer to choose from.

I agree Connie. I too am 51. Everybody I know is married. I have accepted two invitations to go out in the last year. Both experiences were very disappointing. They were after one thing. As usual. Now I turn down all men. I’m still optimistic though. I know God has his plan for me. He showing me the frogs right now.

This is a wonderful story. I love these chance meetings. I had this happen last weekend. It was a salesman at my favorite department store. I think it was flirting more than anything. We asked each other questions and had a great conversation. I was purchasing a watch for a male friend for his birthday so he may have assumed I was spoken for. Sometimes I want to wear a sign saying, “I am available for dating!” Maybe I will see him at the store again…to be continued.

I had this happen to me as well, a “God’s Wink”.

I had been engaged and was feeling quite lonely and down. I had tried dating and the experiences were awful. Some of my single friends and I decided to go out one evening, to get our minds off of being single.

Well, at the bar there was this one man caught my eye right away. Handsome, quiet, sitting with his friends. Oddly enough, one of his friends came over to chat us up, so I asked him if his friend was single. Unfortunately, he was not.

However, my friends and I ended up sitting at their table and talking with them. Taken Guy and I started to chat and hit it off right away. First a little bit about ourselves, our lives, then into deeper conversation. It blew my mind that I could have such a deep connection and conversation with a complete stranger. I think he felt the same way, because I could see him studying me what I can only describe as fascination when he thought I wasn’t looking.

When the night drew to a close, we stared at each other rather wistfully, both leaving a lot of things unsaid. But he was Taken, and I did not want to meddle, and he probably did not want to chance a long term relationship for a random girl he had met at a bar. But instead of feeling sad about it, the whole experience have me hope for what was to come.

Some friends think he will come back into my life at some point, but I’m just leaving it all up to God.. 🙂

I have had so many God winks it kills me sometimes .. Don’t get me wrong, I have met many really great guys and am grateful to have crossed their paths and I am sure they too feel the same about me .. But you know there is this saying in Chinese “The god is dangling the carrot in front of you” .. I feel like that sometimes .. Especially now that more friends are getting hitched and I am still single .. I try to keep my focus on God and activities that I love doing, but going through another God wink is really killing me (currently in the form of a new colleague who for the last few years had been working overseas, for some reason decided to come back to our home country, and so happened to join our company and so happened to be in the same department as I .. And now he has decided to leave for another posting overseas) .. Anyhow, thanks Mandy for your encouraging words & do keep us posted on Cute Phone Guy ! 🙂

I’m pretty new to this blog, but I have to say that I am so inspired by your story and the stories of your follower. I broke up with a guy a couple of months ago and have been praying to God why He encouraged me to break up with this guy. After reading this story and others’ stories here I think I’ve found my answer: this guy was put into my life to show me that there are good guys out there -no matter how few. And that we deserve those guys and that no matter how small the chances, God will put the right, good guy in my life at the right time.

I had one just yesterday. A relatively new guy at church whom I hadn’t paid much notice actually popped up in my matches on an online dating site a week ago or so. I wrote him on the site to thank him for his service as a fireman and mentioned I thought he went to my church. For multiple reasons I won’t go into, I wasn’t sure I was interested in him as a potential date, but had marked him as a maybe to review later. We exchanged messages and I recruited him to get involved with something big at our church. We agreed a few days ago that I would find him at church and we’d discuss it a bit. I found him and it felt like the world stopped turning for a second when he flashed that killer smile at me. We shook hands and chatted for a little while. He followed me to get a schedule and I felt so feminine and free as we walked. He shook my hand again before he left, and smiled that beautiful smile. I had told him if he had any questions about this he could ask me or 2 other people. At home, I realized I didn’t let him know how to reach me. I messaged him on the dating site how to reach me for that … and if he wanted to meet for a coffee or something, let me know. I may never hear from him,but his sweetness and smile will stay with me for some time.

I had an enchanting encounter on a cruise to bermuda. I saw his picture on the board to view and buy pictures of events the ship. I never saw him the whole time until the last night. And what was crazy was he liked my pictures too and was hoping to run into me. We lived in the same city which was awesome and ended up dating afterward. Unfortunately we dont talk now but im glad i was able to experience that. The best things come when your not looking for it. Hopefully my next enchanting encounter will be a lasting one 🙂

Interesting! I have had such moments, having lunch then dinner with two random guys, and this acting as a gentle reminder in a nice way. It made me make an important decision not to date someone who had been asking me and we had been chatting a while since it reminded me that I will enjoy dating a man who we can not connect intellectually. That was very important reminder for me and spending time talking with these two guys… It was just abrupt “can we have lunch if you are free” and then dinner following each other from two different people. It left me thinking more and glad I did
