The Moment Before The Moment

PoohYou know that moment right before Christmas Eve turns into Christmas morning? Or the night before you leave for vacation? Or the split second before you open a birthday gift you’ve been patiently waiting to open for weeks and though you can’t wait to see if it’s that thing you’ve been wanting for so long…a small part of you wants to hit the “pause” button and stay suspended in that moment between what could be and what is?

I think those moments before the moments are some of life’s sweetest. Right when you’re on the edge of something really amazing, and the possibilities seem endless, and never have you felt more hopeful, or expectant, or ALIVE.

I remember when I was little, in the days and even weeks leading into Christmas, I would get up in the middle of the night, every single night, and tiptoe into the living room to peer under the tree and see if maybe, just maybe, this year Santa had come early. Of course he never did, but those quiet moments stealing out of my bedroom, down the hallway, and into the living room were some of the most thrilling and joyous of my life. And then…THEN…finally, Christmas Eve would arrive…and I would repeat the same pattern, rising in the middle of the still, silent night, padding down the hallway in my footie pajamas, praying in my little childish heart that he had paid us a visit…only to be greeted by dozens of beautifully wrapped presents under the tree this time instead of just vacant space. I can think back to it now and still feel the hope and awe and wonder that would rise up in me at the sight of all of the glittering, shiny packages awaiting the moment when the eager hands of two little girls would tear into them. In the stillness of those pre-dawn hours, on the horizon of Christmas morning, those precious moments spent gazing at the long-awaited and much anticipated treasures were almost more wondrous than opening the gifts themselves.

As an adult, those kinds of moments and memories seem to become harder and harder to come by. But the one that for me is the most magical of all is the moment right before you like someone. It’s one of those gifts of single life that I think God pays us back in dividends with because He sees the other moments that we‘re not getting to experience, at least not yet – like anniversaries and first steps and  inside jokes and family vacations. When you’re right on the verge of being completely swept up in the excitement of a new crush might be one of the best moments life has to offer. When the only thing more thrilling than the newness of it all is the uncertainty. It’s actually one of the few times in life when uncertainty feels like a gift. Every text, every time the phone rings, every new email and Facebook message becomes rife with possibility. Could it be him? When would you see him again? WOULD you see him again? The butterflies and the daydreams and the expectation that you might be taking the first steps toward something real just give the world around you a totally different feeling. That feeling is, as Pooh says in the quote above, completely unable to be identified or named or defined. It simply IS.

And it’s wonderful.

Love this! Feeling like I’m in that moment right now, not necessarily in regards to a new crush or romance but just that moment when life in general feels like it’s about to happen and for the better. Who knows though, that may very well include romance. 😉

My favorite “moment before the moment” was the entire week before I moved from Knoxville TN to Boston, all by myself. The excitement of starting a new chapter in life was better than anything else I’ve experienced so far. Hoping for many great pre-moments in the future! 🙂

I’m actually living in the moment before the moment right now! I’m in the process if finishing nursing school, my only child is a graduating, college bound senior, and I’m buying a new home this year!!! I’m excited and thrilled at the same time… Hopeful for the future!

My moment was pausing in pressing the last digit of the phone number that would put me in contact with my biological brother and extended biological family for the first time at the age of 43…

The moments before the moment…after a while , once our kids are grow ups and we have an empty nest… Once our marriage reality hits us … We start all over with the challenge of starting all over again and with lots of experience and wisdom in our life’…. Then we will love to able to feel that energy that happiness that illusion of a moment before the moment…
We start again as a single woman…. We are stronger , we dream a little less , but we have a big faith in us , in God… And we are hungry anxious , to feel the innocence of the moment before the moment …

Ahhhh this is EXACTLY what I’m experiencing right now. After a lifetime of settling and not setting boundaries, I finally decided I’d had enough and that I’d rather be single and celibate than settle. And suddenly I’ve been developing feelings for someone who’s spiritual and intellectual and kind and decent. Not sure where it’s gonna go, it’s only a few dates in, but I feel like I’ve turned a corner in what I’m no longer willing to accept and I think really exciting things are ahead.

I’m there too!! Sounds just like me. Not only that, but life in general is about to get really good after so many years of “not-so-much”… 🙂

These moments are awesome and I can remember many of them in different aspect of my life. It is also very painful when you think he is the one then realizing that he doesn’t feel the same way 🙁
    It’s his loss!

There is so much wisdom in that post! My “moment” lasted for almost 2 yrs, – we worked together. The company frowned heavily on interoffice relationships, so it was a series of lingering glances and suggestive comments. It was beautiful and terrifying all at the same time. Every day held so much potential and I couldn’t wait to get to work.

Sadly, that moment came & went. I played my card out of turn. He folded and hasn’t spoken to me since.

So as you said – TREASURE those moments. It took me forever to forgive myself and let it go, it was a painful lesson for me to learn. Thanks for reminding us all to resist the temptation to “fast-forward” to the main title when we meet someone special. Sometimes the preview is all we were meant to see.

@Lisaa Wow that was powerful, remember all things work together for those who love God. God is a God of restoration :))))

U have put something so clearly into words for me, im in a moment like that, but its really not all plesant, there is anaticipation, uncertainty, pleasure but also many what ifs…What if he is not from God, what if it doesnt work

Right now I am not in the “moment” so much. It is amazing how much power can come in words from those who are suppose to “love” you. I have been single for soon to be 48 years, plus I have no children and just this past week I have heard words that have hurt and I have really realized how “alone” I am. It is taking all that I can muster and depend on God to get me through this low point.

My absolute moment before the moment…ehmm…moment (a lot of moments there) is when I am in a plane about to take off somewhere. Its not just vacations, I usually move to new places a lot. The longest I have stayed in one country (after turning 18) is probably 3 years. Then I just need to leave, and go someplace new. So, yeah. My moment is when I am on the plane and the plane is about to lift. From the moment the plane starts moving to when it is finally in the sky is AMAZING, I always put on some powerful classical music and close my eyes and its like butterflies or something.

I went on a date with a guy this past weekend and it’s incredible to have pulled up your blog and see this article. It hits the nail on the head!! Before I met him for dinner, I was incredibly nervous but now that I think back on it, it was EXACTLY that! The uncertainty of what I could potentially be getting myself into. This could be the first date that I have with my future husband. This dinner and bowling date could be the story I tell our kids about some day. Although it’s scary because I’m not a fan of not having a plan, I really enjoyed reading this article and it made me think even more positively about the next date. 🙂

This past fall, I was riding in a van with 15 other college kids and as we pulled up to the garden where we would be planting/building to help the man provide healthy food for the impoverished, I knew something magical would happen. As the afternoon went on, I knew what it was. I CONQUERED my fears with one of my closest, most amazing friends… My fear of heights and new things… In one thing! I used power tools and helped build a roof. It may sound silly, but it was exhirating and refreshing and I wish I could press pause to the moments of climbing up the ladder and conquering all of my fears at once!

The moment before the moment is one of the best feelings any human being can feel and experience. not knowing is almost liberating..anticipation is exciting..and the adrenaline that comes with the thrill of being in that momenl is priceless. Where is that pause button when you want to be just stuck in the moment? Stuck in such an innocent state of being. You feel alive.
